What's new?

This page will list the latest additions to this site, schedule of local venue appearances, etc.   I'll try to keep this as up-to-date as time permits.  This will be more of a 'blog' than just a list of updates I've made to this site.  I'll just add news to the top of this, in chronological order, leaving older entries intact.  I think I'll get a kick out of reading this later as things progress.  Perhaps you'll be entertained as well.

  1. HISTORY WAS MADE IN THE LAST TWO DAYS!!!  Ground has been broken for Fivebraids, Inc's new shop.  Check out the detailed update to the work shop page for info and pictures. I'm going to try to make almost daily updates, so keep watching that page if you're interested.
  2. Hopefully I'll find time to keep updating this site as I build the shop.  With all the work to be done, I apologize in advance if updates aren't coming very fast.
  3. The various menus were getting a little clumsy so I re-organized links a little.  I've removed the Pond Reconstruction and New Deck links.  They can now be found in the Work Shop 'blog' page.  All the details and pictures are still there.  I just moved them off the navigation bars.  You can also go to them directly here for Pond Reconstruction and here for our new deck and spa.  A new browser window will open.  Simply close the new window when you're done and you'll be returned here.

  1. Made a long overdue update to the site!
  2. We've been busy working with all that salvaged firewood.  I've added a picture of the rounds that we split.  I'll try to post a few pictures of what we have stacked so far.  We're "guesstimating" about 30 cords, and we're not done stacking!
  3. We've also made a new addition to the house/property.  Check out the New Deck and Spa page for details.
  4. I'm finalizing plans for the shop, and will hopefully be breaking ground in the next week or two.  Stayed tuned for updates...

  1. Spent the better part of the day cutting the salvaged wood into rounds, in preparation for splitting.  Added a picture showing the progress.

  1. Added a few shots showing that the trash piles are almost gone!

  1. Added a few more shots of the progress we're making getting the land cleared for the new shop.  Also added a shot showing the progress of the pond.  It's almost full!!

  1. Lots of pictures scanned
    • I've been busy scanning lots of pictures.  As a result, there are now pictures of my Scottsdale shop available in the work shop section.  There are also pictures of some of my work in the gallery section.  (I never realized how few pictures I have of my work.  I have to start making a point of photographing all of my work!)

  1. Since this is the first entry on this newly created page, in this newly created site, EVERYTHING on this site is NEW!
  2. I'm in the process of learning FrontPage 2003 to design this site.
    • As I mention elsewhere on this site, I'm a degreed computer professional, with a strong background in web technologies.  But, I'm from the 'old school' of web programming!  I was in management for the last ten years of my career, so I had programmers working for me that did all the coding. The last actual web development I did used HTML 1.0, tables were just being introduced and not properly supported, and frames weren't even on the drawing board.  Themes in FrontPage?  Front 'who'?  You get the idea...
    • Add to this mix that I'm in the process of learning to use Dynamic Web Templates (DWT's), and external Cascading Style Sheets (CSS's) in FrontPage so this site can be easily maintained and be as cross-browser friendly as possible.  If you notice something that doesn't look quite right on the particular browser you're using, please let me know about it using the Contact Info link at the bottom of any page.  I'll do what I can to correct any problems you might find.
    • I avoided the use of gratuitous eye-candy when developing this site for a few reasons.  This site is supposed to showcase my wood working abilities, not my coding skills.  Eye-candy, be it Flash, JavaScript, or ActiveX controls, tend to slow down a site, and usually for no good reason.  I think you've noticed that this site loads relatively quickly, even at dial-up speeds.  Aside from extensive photos in the Gallery and Work Shop sections, I'll try my best to keep this site as speedy as possible.
  3. There are several sections of this site that are far from being complete.
    • In particular, there aren't any images in the Gallery or Scottsdale shop sections yet.  My only real portfolio is currently housed in a large photo album, with none of the pictures available as digital images.  I have a scanner, and am in the process of getting the pictures digitized.  I then have to clean them up as much as possible and get them into a coherent structure so they can be posted.  Please be patient with me...
  4. Here's a big one:  I HAVE NO SHOP RIGHT NOW!
    • That's right.  When I 'retired' in April of 2005, I decided to leave the hectic Northern Virginia area and move south where it doesn't snow.  I have a great new house now, but there's no shop on the property.
    • I'm in the process of using Sketchup to design my new shop.  Once I have the design completed, I'll be building the shop.  Until the new shop is built and operational, my tools are all in storage.  That means I can't take on any new commissions.  I can discuss any needs you might have, and even work up tentative designs, but without tools and a shop to use them in, I'm at a loss to complete any work.
    • The Work Shop link on this site will be constantly updated with pictures and progress reports of the shop construction process.  Watch the progress (or lack thereof) unfold before you.
    • Even though the lack of a shop is driving me crazy, it's probably a blessing in disguise.  If I had my shop open, I wouldn't have any time to a) learn all the things in #2 above, or b) get all the manual, time-consuming things in #3 above completed.  Yeah, that's it, this is a blessing.  I'll just keep repeating that to myself...over and over...
