Frequently Asked Questions
Why was this website created?
- Aside from the obvious answer that "everyone has to
have a website",
it serves as my online portfolio. I meet new people all
the time, and if I have business cards with me, I'll offer them
one. My web address is printed on the card so that they
can come here to see some of my work, or just get more
information about me. This is easier than having a
portfolio with me all the time, and allows people to view this
information at their leisure. It also gives my existing clients a place to come
to see what I've been up to.
Why can't I buy items directly from this website?
- The simple answer is because I very rarely build anything
'on spec'. Just about everything I create is commissioned
(made to order). I prefer to discuss design, materials,
timeframes and pricing with my clients before I begin work.
This way I know my clients will get what they expect, when they
expect it, and there won't be any surprises.
- There are occasions when I'll attend local crafts fairs or
other local venues where I'll have some items available for
sale. I'll post details about these venues in advance,
including the sort of items I intend to have available in the "What's
New" section of this website. Check there for updates
if you're interested.
- There may also be times when I'll have items for sale,
either left over from art/craft shows, or because I simply "felt
like building something particular". These items will also be
listed in the "What's New" section. You'll also
find them in the "Gallery" section, with a clear
indicator that the item is available for purchase.
What if I know I want a table (or cabinet, or turned vessel, or
gift item, etc.), but I'm not exactly sure about all the details?
- That's an easy one! Bring me your rough idea, a
sketch, or a magazine or newspaper clipping and let me work with
you to develop it into plans for that special piece. Visit the "Custom Design"
section of this site and you'll see how we can work together to
develop plans for an item that will meet your needs and desires.
What's "Fivebraids" and where did it come from?
- I should probably move this to the top of this list of
questions, since I get this so often. It's simple, really.
If you look closely at the picture of me on the bio page,
you'll notice that my hair is really long. In my past
life, I was a pseudo-executive for a large Software Corporation.
I had to "play the game" and dress in fancy suits to keep the
clientele appeased. But since I'm not a good game player
and tend to make my own rules, I kept my hair long and kept it
very neatly braided into "five little braids". I still
keep my hair very long, and still keep it in those "five little
braids". It's sort of become my trademark. When
people meet me in person and ask me this question, I usually
just turned around and wait for "Oh, I get it"...
